James Murphy


Archaeologist/ Scientific Recovery Expert

A graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway and Bournemouth University in the UK, James has nearly twenty years experience in the field of archaeology and spent the majority of his forensic archaeology career in mid and post conflict environments in the Middle East and the Balkans, working on some of the most high profile cases of genocide and mass atrocities. As senior forensic archaeologist with the International Commission on Missing Persons, James worked on human rights abuses and mass atrocity cases such as the Anfal campaign against the Kurds and those against Shia populations in Iraq, war crimes in Bosnia and the atrocities committed by Islamic State in Iraq. 

James has provided expert training and capacity building for government ministries, judicial authorities and law enforcement to elevate forensic practice to meet the highest international standards. He holds a BA in Archaeology, MA in Landscape Archaeology, MSc in Forensic Archaeology and International Investigations, PGDip Systems Analysis. James has been with History Flight since June 2018. James’ other interests lie in the applications of GIS and archaeo-geophysics in mass grave investigations.
